What are the best subjects for pencil shading practice?

Crumpled paper, a white egg under one lamp, glassware, and a worn leather boot. All have clear plane changes and no distracting colour, so a shading error shows up immediately rather than hiding behind detail.

What pencils do I need?

Three is plenty: an HB for construction, a 2B for mid tones, and a 6B for the darks. A single HB is the most common reason drawings look flat — it physically cannot produce a convincing black.

How do I stop my shading looking grey and muddy?

Reduce it to five values and leave the lightest as untouched paper. Muddiness comes from filling every area with a mid tone and never committing to a real black. Establish the darkest dark in the first few minutes.

How do I blend without smudging everything?

Build tone with layered hatching in one or two directions rather than blending. If you do blend, use a paper stump on the mid tones only and keep it away from the highlights — fingers spread oil and flatten the whole drawing.

How do I draw realistic texture?

Texture is value, not marks. Fur, brick, and fabric read because the light and shadow pattern is right; the marks only sell it at the very end. Get the big value shapes correct first and add texture in the transition areas only.

How long should a pencil study take?

Twenty to forty-five minutes for a single object. Less than twenty and you will not get past outline; much more and most people start over-rendering and lose the value structure that was working.
