What should beginners avoid drawing?

Nothing permanently, but hands, cars, bicycles, and full faces will demoralise you in week one. They need proportion judgement you have not built yet. Come back to them once circles and boxes behave.

Do I need to learn perspective first?

No. Learn to see relationships — this is twice as tall as it is wide, this edge lines up with that one — before any formal perspective. One-point perspective makes far more sense once your eye already knows something is wrong.
