Zentangle Heart

Draw a heart filled with repeating zentangle patterns.

intermediate25–48 minutesdoodle

Practice focus

Maintain a clear heart silhouette while balancing dense and quiet black-and-white pattern zones inside curved compartments

Compose an exercise

Construction sequence

Build what matters first

  1. 1

Draw a large heart with a centered notch, matched upper lobes, and a clean taper to the lower point.

  2. 2

Divide the interior into broad curved ribbons that flow from the upper lobes toward the point.

  3. 3

Assign a different motif family to each compartment, such as spiral, scallop, stripe, leaf, dot, or grid.

  4. 4

Alternate dense black zones with more open line patterns so adjacent compartments remain distinguishable.

  5. 5

Thicken selected boundary curves and clean the outer contour only after every pattern ends neatly at its compartment edge.

Make it easier

Reduce the decisions

Divide a small heart into four compartments and fill them with dots, stripes, scallops, and one spiral.

Make it harder

Transfer the structure

Build a larger heart with twelve interlocking compartments, nested motif scales, and a deliberate black-value path from lobe to point.

Difficulty rubric

Why this is intermediate

The label is an editorial band, not a precise score. It considers the factors below; your feedback is stored locally and does not silently change the rating.

  • controlled heart symmetry
  • curved compartment design
  • dense motif consistency
  • black-white value balance
